Papakonstantinou Alexandros

Artist’s CV

Alexandros Papakonstantinou (born Neo Faliro in June 1952) is a Greek contemporary painter.

He studied painting and Art History in Athens (Pierce College 1970-73) and in Rome (Istituto Restauro 1975-78). The artist’s work consists of two sections, the semi-representative and the abstract geometric. His painting is semi-representative, but with particular emphasis on selected realistic elements and with particular respect for detail. Also decisive in his works is the role of the background, which most often co-stars with his main subjects.

His work has been written about by Academician Chrysanthos Christou (Catalogue of the Sellini Gallery, 1998 and Catalog of the 1st Retrospective Exhibition at the Public Art Gallery of Thessaloniki, 1999), University Art Historian Professor, Yiannis Kolokotronis (Peri ou Magazine, February 2024 ) the Art Historian and Technical Critic Dora Iliopoulou Rogan, (Zygos Invitation, 1994- Catalog “Ta Dysypostata”, Ersis Gallery, 1996), the University Professor and Technical Critic Athena Schina, (“Spring Symphony” Catalog, Libra Gallery, 2004 ), the Art Historian Eleni Kaplani-Kokkini, (Catalogue of the Municipal Gallery of Thessaloniki, 1999) the Journalists Technocritics, Iliana Mortoglou, (Rizospastis, 22.04.98), Iro Mavroidis, (Avgi, 22.05.94) Dimitris Charitos, (ANTI , Summer ’94), Alexandra Koroxenidou (ARTMAGAZIN Magazine, Summer ’94), the Art Historian Hera – Parakei Papapostolou (ART 22, 2018) etc.

He is considered the founder of “Metaphysical Semi-Fictional Writing”. The Academician and Professor of Philosophy of Aesthetics Ion Diamantopoulos, in his relevant opinion about the artist, characterizes him as “The Great Unknown” of Modern Greek Painting. Likewise, the English Academician and professor at the University of Sheffield, Alan Andrew Moran, in his similar study of the painter, considers him to be the preeminent metaphysical modern painter[1]. Art historian and technical critic Dr. Dora Iliopoulou Rogan also signs a related study on the artist, entitled “Alexandros Papakonstantinou – The Metaphysician”. Similar is the position of the Academic – Emeritus Professor of the University of Athens – Chrysanthos Christos, in his opinion about the painter[2]. He has to his credit seventeen Individual Exhibitions in Greece and abroad and over a hundred Group Exhibitions, (Greece and abroad) where he has co-exhibited with the biggest names in the field.

And Professor Yiannis Kolokotronis ranks him as the most avant-garde contemporary Greek artist, a characterization also attributed to him by the Italian Art Historian and Curator, Giullia Tassi, (Press Release of the 19th Venice International Art Exhibition – February 2024).

His works can be found in the Art Gallery of the Municipality of Athens, the Municipal Art Gallery of Thessaloniki, the Municipal Art Gallery of Patras, the “Alekos Kontopoulos” Art Gallery (Lamia), the Cyclades Art Gallery, the G.Voyatzoglou Art Gallery, as well as in other Art Galleries in Greece, in the Collection of Emporiki Bank, in the Collection of the General Bank and in large private collections in Greece and abroad.

Dedicated to the study of various painting techniques, after almost eleven years of research, he is the first artist who, at the end of 2021, established the “marriage” of classical analog painting with that of digital processing, giving another dimension to modern digital creation, which made him to stand out at the 19th Venice Fair as one of the most avant garde visual artists in the world.

Already at the end of 2022, both in Europe and America, he has managed to establish the term “tropism” in painting, giving it new expressive possibilities. Recently, in 2023 he spearheaded the creation of the International Marathon Center for Visual Arts (www.imvac.gr) with the collaboration of international artists such as Petros Zoumboulakis, Vangelis Rinas, Manolis Charos, Angelika Korovesi, Nikos Stratakis, Athena Latinopoulou, Stathis Vatanidis et al. He has been living and working since 2000 in the Marathon area.
